Short answer

Propler's market analysis gives you an overview of an industry group in a Norwegian county or all of Norway: how many companies there are, how they are distributed by size, how the segment is growing and which companies are largest. It is built on Enhetsregisteret and the latest annual accounts. It requires login, covers Norway only, and the number of top companies shown depends on your plan.

The problem: market questions with no quick answer

"How many companies are there in our segment in Rogaland?" "Is the industry growing or shrinking?" "Who are the ten largest players?" These are basic questions for a business plan, an expansion decision or a sales territory plan. Statistics Norway (SSB) publishes official industry statistics, but they are aggregated and often not cut the way you need. Building your own numbers from raw register data takes time and some technical skill.

Market intelligence in Propler means answering those questions directly from the register, for a specific industry group and region, in a few clicks.

What the market analysis shows

In market analysis you choose an industry group and either a county or all of Norway. You get:

  • Number of companies in the segment.
  • Size distribution, so you can see whether the market is dominated by a few large companies or made up of many small ones.
  • Growth in the segment.
  • The largest companies in the segment. How many are listed depends on your plan.

From the list of largest companies you can open each company page to see register facts, roles, financial figures from the latest annual accounts, job ads and tenders.

Use cases

The examples are hypothetical.

Sizing a market before expanding to a new county

A Trondheim-based electrical contractor is considering opening an office in Møre og Romsdal. It runs a market analysis for electrical installation in that county and compares it with Trøndelag: how many competitors there are, how large they are and whether the segment is growing. This tells the company whether the market is fragmented enough for a new entrant.

Writing the market section of a business plan

A founder planning a specialist bookkeeping service for restaurants needs to describe the target market for a bank or investor. She runs an analysis of food and beverage service activities in Oslo and nationwide, and uses the number of companies and size distribution as the factual basis for her market estimate. She states clearly in the plan which numbers are register facts and which are her own assumptions.

Planning a sales territory

A B2B software company with two salespeople wants to split Norway between them. It runs the analysis for its core industry in each county and allocates counties so each seller gets a similar number of mid-sized companies. It then uses AI search or the free company search to build the actual account lists.

  • Login: market analysis requires an account.
  • Plan limits: the number of largest companies shown depends on your plan. See current plans at /priser.

Limitations and how to read the numbers

  • Register counts are not active-market counts. The register can include dormant companies, holding companies and companies registered in one place but operating elsewhere. Treat counts as an upper bound and check the largest companies individually.
  • Industry codes are imperfect and recently changed. Industry codes are based on what companies report about their activity, and a code is not always updated when the business changes. From 1 September 2025 Enhetsregisteret moved to SSB's new standard SN2025, based on NACE Rev. 2.1, and several codes were split or changed. Comparisons with older lists or statistics using SN2007 may not line up exactly.
  • Accounts cover only some companies. Limited companies must file annual accounts, but sole proprietorships only above certain size thresholds. Growth and size figures are strongest for segments dominated by limited companies.
  • Figures lag. The latest accounts describe the previous financial year.
  • Not official statistics. For published industry statistics, use SSB. Propler's analysis is a fast view of register data, useful for decisions but not a substitute for a full market study.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the market numbers come from?

From our copy of Enhetsregisteret, refreshed nightly from Brønnøysundregistrene's open data, combined with the latest annual accounts from Regnskapsregisteret where they exist.

Is this the same as SSB statistics?

No. SSB publishes official statistics with its own methods. Propler counts and summarises register entries, which is faster and more flexible but not official statistics.

Can I analyse markets outside Norway?

No. Market analysis covers Norwegian counties and Norway as a whole only.
